Advances in in-situ barriers have been marked in the past few years to the extent that we referred to them as aesthetically pleasing in a recent advertising campaign.
The Flip-up barrier is one example of an in-situ barrier that is effective for river and sea defences at heights up to 2m but when folded away will look just like a part of the pavement or promenade. The barrier can be made to rise automatically when the water reaches a predetermined height. This solution would be accompanied by cameras and sirens to ensure that people and vehicles are not in the way of the rising barrier. Alternatively it can be raised at the push of a button or by hand.
Gates as part of a bund wall for utility plants and sea/river walls can be locked in the open position ready to be closed at a moment’s notice when a flood alarm is raised.
Glass barriers around vulnerable office buildings can offer a very attractive permanent solution to property flooding. These barriers can be installed as a complete wall or singly in river walls to offer strategic viewing points.
